Ambulatory BP Monitoring

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)

ABPM is a method to measure your blood pressure (by a digital machine that stays with you) while you continue living your normal routine life. At specified intervals during the entire day, it records the blood pressure readings as per your movement. This is advanced testing equipment and is ordered only in cases of high blood pressure (hypertension) cases.

While your blood pressure is measured with the ABPM technique, the medical device takes readings of your blood pressure every 15-30 minutes throughout the day and every 30-60 minutes in the night. It is important to carry out this procedure only during a normal daily routine as otherwise if you add stress, it results in an incorrect diagnosis.

Why is 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring used?

Ambulatory BP monitoring provides additional information about how changes in your BP may correlate with your daily activities and sleep patterns. Guidelines for blood pressure management from the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology now strongly recommend confirming a diagnosis of hypertension with ambulatory BP monitoring.
